The dollar is weakening, so don't expect to enjoy the sweet exchange rates from a few years ago. Still, it's not horrible: a US dollar will get you about a buck-twenty-five Canadian, which ain't too shabby. But, then again, don't think that the folks who run Whistler don't know what U.S. dollars are worth -- pricing can reflect this :-)
Vancouver is a wonderful city, as cities go; very cosmopolitan, vibrant. Having to fly in & drive out of there isn't a liability, IMO.
Whistler's skiing is, truly, world-class -- compared to Vail, it has more terrain, much larger vertical drop, unbelievable, glaciated mountain scenary (not that the Colorado Rockies are ugly, it's just a different view than what most are used to, even skiers :-). Whistler is also warmer, though that can sometimes work against it. Conversely, Colorado can be butt-cold. For some, this is a consideration.
Also a consideration is snow -- right now, the Pacific Northwest is having a lousy early season. If things don't pick up, then you're going to see a lot of skiers commiting hari-kari with their poles in about a month. It might be worth it to see how BC's and the American West's 90-day weather forecasts are shaping up. Surf NOAA or NWS sites; shouldn't be too tough to find out what's what weather-wise. Then again, if you're a fairly casual skier, then, perhaps, I wouldn't worry too much.
Last, I know for a fact that Utah is getting *dumped* on so far. If a good mix of skiing/shops/eats is important to you, then definitely look in to Park City.
