Well, you asked two questions. Whistler and Vail both have great shops and slopes. With Whistler, you can walk around Vancouver which is plus but if you are planning on walking around only the ski resort, than both places has enough to keep you busy for a day of shopping. (restrant and window shopping too)

Whistler and Blackcomb is essentially a two mountains. They are great.

Vail is essentially a 5 peak mountains with great bowl (back) on powder day, but like anyther resorts in Colorado, (with exception to Crested Butte, and Silverton) they are on the "flatter" side of the slopes. (I like steep and deep)

The selling point of Vail is that their lift ticket is good for other resorts in Colorado. This means if it didn't snow all that much at Vail, but it dumps at next resort, you can get there quickly.

that being said, I'm going to Whistler in April. Hopefully they (still) have snow by then. As others have stated, NW got no snow this year ('04) so it better start dumping in '05!
