SAABs, like all cars, like all complex machines for that matter are as reliable as how they are maintained. A few months ago I purchased a 1983 900 turbo with 172,000 on the clock that has been very well maintained. I bought it as a 3rd car (already own a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer and a 1987 900 turbo convertible) but it rapidly turned into my almost-daily driver because it's in such good shape and gets such good gas mileage. It's 21 years old with alot of mileage (175,000 now) but highly reliable!
But like others said if you don't maintain it, it will not be reliable. The same is true in my opinion for ANY brand of car, or airplane, or boat, or motorcyle, or bicycle, etc. As a pilot I fly planes much older and with many more hours than my SAABs, but just as, if not more reliable...but it takes maintenance to keep them that way.
That's how I'd respond to anyone who says the brand is unreliable. I guess "reliable" is a difficult term to truly define and to a certain extent it's a very subjective term. That's my $.02 worth....
