Well everyone has thoroughly missed the boat here, so I guess it's my turn, because I said it is :D
The key is the nature of problems that Saabs have. Take 9-3's, for example. They have problems with the headgaskets. They also have problems with the heater controls. Now, these are two items which are on every car, and have been on every car for decades. The technology used in these applications is widespread. There is no excuse for failure. But hundreds of Saabs have these problems.
What people don't (or won't) realize is that this idea of unreliable and/or worthless cars was started directly by Saab as a company. When you prove yourself incapable of bolting the head on correctly or designing a plastic knob, you send a direct, easy to interpret message out to the whole world. In an identical way, the company BMW has started rumors about their own reliablity, as has every other company who at some point, took someones money. These rumors manifest themselves in several ways over time, for instance, in sales figures. Look at the sales figures for models of car over the past 10 years, that might tell you a lot, because the American people always react vehemently with the checkbook. But the bottom line is that Saab has 100% control over what people say about them, because Saab has 100% control over its products. The only entity that may say something about Saabs products is Saab. Everyone who says something about Saabs, negative or positive, is simply repeating exactly what Saab indicated to them.
Moreover, look at some of the other responses to this thread. Scott Paterson claims there are 250,000 visitors a month to the problem solving forums and that there would be twice as many if Saabs were unreliable. Not exactly a claim I'd hang my hat on if I were Saab.
Willy said that he had to replace an ABS sensor that was twisted due to the front wheels frequently turning left or right. I ask, what did the Saab engineers have in mind besides the front wheels turning left or right? It's kind of disheartening to know that my brakes may fail due to my repeatedly steering the car.
Don't get me wrong. I love Saabs. I'm on my third one. I'm known throughout the county as a Saab nut. But I've never given Saab a free ride and I'm not going to start now. and if any of y'all are going to give Saab a free ride, please let me know, I've got some KILLER investment opportunities you will DEFINITELY want in on :D
