$434 for "doing nothing": not accurate

That $434 figure sounds like it could be about half (maybe less?) of what a dealer in your area might charge to remove a transmission, replace a clutch, and reinstall the transmission. Since all they did was remove the transmission (and likely bolted the subframe back in place so the car could be rolled out of their shop), it seems as though they charged a prorated amount for the amount of work they did. They DID do work...BUT:
Were you presented with the $2400 estimate BEFORE or AFTER the transmission was pulled? Did you agree to an estimate (verbally or in writing) authorizing them to remove the transmission and inspect the clutch?
Keep in mind...a transmission in your trunk is better than the a transmission on your front seat. They should have put the tranny in a plastic bag, and they could have been careful not to scratch your bumper/trunk opening.
I agree with another post in this thread...it is time for you to find a reputable independent SAAB repair specialist and develop a mutually respectful relationship. You and your Viggen will go far there.
Good luck,
Eric H.
