Part of the DIY issue is I live in town with no garage and no place to really work on the car. Beacon Street (for those familiar with Boston) is not the ideal place to "learn" how to work on a car. Not only that, its bone chilling this time of year outside. I am moving to the burbs in the spring, despite still not having a garage I will have some space to tinker. I can't wait...
As you duly noted, this bb is an EXCELLENT support structure and worse comes to worse you can always tow the car to someone who can fix it. I did some math and despite my atrocious repair tally, I'm still way ahead of the curve if I were sitting here making $500 payments on a spanking new car.
