Must be that posh part of Boston you are living in, :)
I would say keep looking. There are repairs I simply choose not to dyi because I do not have the right tool, or enough time. After one or two experiences like yours, I found a very good import shop that will accept parts I bring in, a couple service stations that will do brakes and such with parts I buy online, etc. (A dealer usually will not.)
$4k per year is a lot to spend on a car that has less than 60k miles. Up to then, I only had the serp belt related problems.
After 60k, about $1k/yr. Turbocharger at 82k, probably due to a problem with cheap oil filters, $2k (I did save five bucks on the filter tho, something to be proud of, <grin>). At 96k, my budget is $2-3k per year. By my definition, that qualifies as a reliable car with average maintenance cost.
A valve cover gasket should not just fail at 45k, unless there is excess pressure under the valve cover for some other reason. The other items you listed are also normally things that only fail or need replacement around 100k, not 50-60k.
Example repair costs (96 SET):
water pump
dealer: about $500 parts and labor
part from eEuroparts: $109
import shop: $170 labor
Tires Plus: $100 labor
brake caliper
dealer: about $250 part about $100 labor
import shop: $100 (remanufactured part) $100 labor
part from sobstory.com: $75
local brake shop: $50 labor
