Since I just recently discovered this board, I've spent some time researching the posts here to learn as much as I could about the cars, but I'm even more impressed (amazed actually) by the level of thoughtful communication. Given that all of you love the Saab as much as I do, I'm throwing this out there to see what your thoughts are.

I took my '88 C900 (or is it 900C - lingo help here?) in for what I believed would be a fairly pricey repair (drivers side wiper fell off in a heavy rainstorm on I-95 in FL ) and I had a couple very minor questions (so I thought). I'm also new to where we're living, so it's a new shop (Saab cert) to me as well, and the tech owns a 900, so I'm somewhat confident they know what they're doing. I love driving my Saab and they HAVE to love it as much as I do.

Well, they called late in the day with a huge list, a rather significant list, or rather a list of significant items, to say the least, of things that need to be repaired. Whoa. They must really love my car.

The good news is that my car has low mileage (87k) and the body is in excellent shape, no rust. Except for not finding the right people to work on it when I first bought it 6 yrs ago, it's been well-maintained. The only other thing I needed to do (so I thought) was to replace the foggy headlights, which I planned to do on-line, so that isn't even on the list.

The bad news is all that they found and their quote. It's about $3800.

It's now 2005. My car is now 17 yrs old (fabulous isn't it?). I'm now living in the "motor capital" of the world where you find some of the nicest people in the states, but their driving here easily competes w/ what I remember of Boston! Doing 65 in a 40 is not uncommon, nor is consistently trying to defy the laws of physics - the basic one, that no more than one object can occupy the same space concurrently - they simply refuse to believe that one.

Tonight I discovered the classifieds here and learned there are newer models w/ safer technology ( the airbags) & the zip of the turbo for just a bit more than my repair.

So do I throw in the towel on my beloved C900?? Not only is it a Classic car, it's so unique on the road now - I see so few of them! Do I leap from the heavy, solid and sound to the airbag equipped?? Do I go from the known replacements to the unknown? (Of course, I didn't think anything was in serious need of attention either) Whaddyathink?

thanks!
