You are obviously an excellent mechanic and unselfish with your knowledge. I know many independents who are happy and willing to do just the minimum for a fair price, but you may chose, and I may chose not to dwell at that level.
I don't do 17 year old cars well either. I'm too picky too. Their so far off the bell curve of what's between being out of warranty and only 10 years old. Sometimes when taking on fixing a car that old, 3 more things will break while it's in you shop which is of course assumed to be your fault. Catering to older car is a different style.
I do new Saabs and CPOs, lots less headaches, more affluent clientle. Giving a high estimate is one way to ensure that a troublesome car (or customer) won't be using you which is the preferred course some times. There's plenty of much more normal customers with newer cars that don't have issues.
I feel lucky to have found a good place that will do just the minimums for my '93 900S Vert with 152k, Swedish Auto AB in San Diego. My wife drives this car every day, in the sunshine, or at least not in the rain, she's got my 9-5 Aero today, but I do believe I could get a similar estimate to Kate's on this car many places.
