They explain and priorities what's needed right now and what can wait and what's cosmetic.
The reason why we are picky is because when the next thing fails on the car and an irate customer comes back angry saying, "why didn't you tell me this was bad too" we can show them that infact it is listed on the last workorder and we talked about it.
As I said in an earlier post, I might scare away some customers with a high total repair estimate and they go to another shop where they get "nickel and dime" to death and reach the same, or close to, amount of money a year or two from now.
The responses Kate has received are all valuable and learning.
It is also important to keep in mind that some people respond from a DIY point of view and as for me, a professional Saab shops point of view.
A shop need to do the repair in a way that they can leave warranty on the job.
The wiper assembly I have no problem repairing since my repair is stronger than the factory design but when it comes to taking a brake master cylinder apart and do a partial or full rebuild I back off on that one and install a new master cylinder.
IF? the brake system has never been flushed before (we don't know the full story of old repairs) the master cylinder is a "ticking bomb" and could easily fail just by replacing the two upper reservoir seals (if that's what's leaking) and adding new fluid.
