Winter Tires Posted by Byron [Email] (#1760) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Byron) on Thu, 6 Jan 2005 13:37:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I recently purchased a 2003 Saab 9-3 Linear, which came with a set of so-called high performance, low profile, Pirelli tires, size 225-45-17. My understanding is that these tires are great for driving on dry pavement, but do poorly on snow and ice. I am also getting the impression that it is not possible to use cable chains with these tires ... although I am not sure if that is a because of the 9-3 design or the particular tires I have. A couple of places I have called, including the Saab dealer, said that I probably could not use cable chains on this vehicle due to the minimal clearance around the wheels. They said to check my manual, which I did, and I couldn't find anything saying that I could not use cables. Out of an abundance of caution I am just going to assume that I can't use cables.
So I am thinking about putting on a set of winter tires and a local tire store has a set of Hankook winter tires. My question is .. what is the best option is for winter/snow/ice driving conditions if I can't use cable chains. Do I also need to get new wheels/rims to accommodate the winter tires? Do most owners go back and forth between winter and summer tires? or is it best to get a set of all season radials?
I could always just use a set of cable chains on my old 85 Saab .. and most of the time I didn't even need them.
Any suggestions?
