I was getting the impression that the fact that I couldn't use cables was a function of the vehicle design ... perhaps the size of the wheel wells .. but ... is this also a function of the tire size? If I got a 16" or 15" tire could I used cables then? That would be my ideal solution .. since I only need the cables for the few days a year we get snow and ice accumulations (I live in the Seattle area). In that case I'd just toss the high performance tires and get a set of ... all weather radials .. and keep a set of cables in the trunk just in case.

Dedicated winter tires seem like overkill for this area and I would only consider them if I was precluded from using cables ... which .. I guess, I'm still trying to determine.
