it can be dangerous to walk our two dogs. We have no sidewalks and people will blast by at 40 or 50 in a 30 mph zone--narrow 2-lane road, woods on each side. No one ever slows down.
Something I've been noticing is how close drivers come to the dogs and I before they move left to give us more room. The vast majority (about 9 out of 10 cars) do so about 30 feet away--usually with a sudden lurch to the left. So they are apparently paying very little attention to what's ahead of them. (Full disclosure: I drive such roads at 40, but slow to 30 and pull left about 100 feet of any pedestrians and/or dogs)
Once some kid in his mom's BMW X5 came by at 70 and my wife an daughter jumped into the woods. The guy went by me seconds later (I was a quarter mile further down to road), but I got the plate number. I called the cops and they went to the house and rained on the kid's parade. He wrote an apology that the cops delivered to me. The mom pulled the kid's license for a couple of weeks.
But overall, I think it is typically inept driving, cell phones, distracted drivers and yes, cars that isolate drivers from the world around them.
