I believe this type of behavior is obvious in all aspects of American life, and getting more so. My view is similar to Egan's, and I greatly enjoyed his column about it. I am of similar age, 51, and grew up with driving and performance of cars as a part of my view on the world. I drove a restored and modified MGTD as a teenager and drove it as hard and fast as it would go. The rule was to slow down and drive respectfully and safely around others, homes, schools, towns on rural roads, etc. I was proud of how quickly I could go thru two double-clutch, heel-toe, downshifts from all out to 25 MPH. I also had two years of labor and investment in that car, and any avoidable risk was also very important. But I also bus my own table when appropriate, pick up litter when it's in front of me, sweep the loose gravel out of the intersection in front of my house, know how fast I'm going at all times and drive in the center of the lane. I've whimsically thought about forming a drivers club with the only purpose of establishing a code of conduct - you agree to follow it and join and display the 'logo' on your cars.
