In addition to more distractions, I think a frightening number of drivers have a really poor sense of spatial relations, and no sense at all about where the right side of their vehicle actually is. The result is driving either too close, or too far away, from stuff on that side of the car.
In my older urban neighborhood, with narrow streets and a lane of parked cars, we get the latter - I'm often forced to the curb by oncoming drivers taking their half of the road from the middle (and still almost hitting me), while leaving a huge gap on their right-hand side.
It's frightening how many people are willing to drive a big mass of steel at high speeds with only a vague sense of where the edges of it are.
