Depends on what you are doing with it...

I've always been a Nikon fan and I like the D70 a lot. It feels more robust than the Canon Rebel EOS. The 3 frames/second is nice.
But the real question is how are you going to use the cam? If you are getting serious enough about photography that you want to access the range of lenses for an SLR, then go for an SLR. They really are worth it, especially with good lenses (which IMHO is what you pay for, especially on a Nikon). But remember it comes with more hassle. You end up carrying the extra lenses and this means a bigger camera bag. So when you get on a plane, you have to deal with that extra piece of luggage. It becomes more of a production and less casual. This is fine, but you have to be ready for it. Plus, while any of the new digital SLRs run in a point-and-shoot mode, the extra bulk just makes them a bit less convenient. Personally, I do like just pulling a cam out of a pocket and shooting, and not having it around my neck all the time.
It's not a direct comparison, but I find I hardly ever use my old Nikon 35 mm SLR any more, and my wife doesn't use her Olympus much either. We both use the digital--a Nikon CoolPix 950--which we'll upgrade this year.
On the other hand, if I am going hiking or someplace where the camera is likely to get wet or banged around, the old 35mm, with limited electronics is the choice. It went in a lake 2 years ago. Dried it out in the sun for a day and it worked fine. Then I just took it in for a cleaning. The digital would have gone in the trash.
