and do you have different lenses for the camera ? If so, then check if the same camera maker has digital SLR cameras that can use your existing lenses. Then you don't have to spend more $$$ for the lenses, filters, etc..
The main point of having a SLR, digital or otherwise, is that you can change the lenses among other things.
To me, all digital cameras are already SLR like, i.e. what you see on the screen is what you get. The only part missing is the ability to change the lens on a non-SLR type digital camera.
How often do you use the camera ? Do you usually tote it with you when you travel ? Maybe you would consider getting a real compact digital camera that comes with a good lens, good range of optical zoom 4X+ or so. Also, the ability to use regular batteries would be good too in additional to a rechargable battery pack. Also, a water resistant/proof camera would also be nice as well.
In the old days with films, you need to do various special effects with the camera, lens, filters, etc. at the moment you take the picture. With digital, you can do a lot of the processing after the fact so the digital SLR really has little advantage over an all-in-one digital camera for casual use.
