A nitpick: Digital SLR's are true SLRs. DSLR's have a reflex mirror which diverts light to the view finder. The only significant difference between the digital and film SLR cousins is in the back of the camera, where a CCD versus film is exposed to light for DSLRs.* More in the link below.
Besides full manual control and removable lenses, DSLRs have several other major advantages to other digitals. 1) The CCD is physically larger than P&S cameras, even if the mega pixel rating is the same. This means signicantly less 'noise' in the image. 2) DSLRs are way, way faster than other digitals. On a D70 you can hit the 'on' knob and take an auto-focussed picture less than 1/3 s later. You can also take several pictures a second. Other DSLRs are similar, and pro models much faster. This is nearly indispensible for a lot of shooting.
