I have a Vermont Castings that I've had for about three years and it is a great grill, albeit a little pricey. I've seen the newer ones in Home Depot, though, and they're not the same kind of beast. Sounds maybe like the Home Depot Weber story, the one I have has a lot of really heavy cast iron on it that I don't see on the Home Depot versions. I do still use a Weber kettle style grill for charcoal, too, but especially in the cold Mass. weather, it's nice to be able to step out, start the grill in 20 seconds, and then run back inside while it warms up.
