They're pretty easy to use. I put one or two Weber fire-starters in with the charcoal (I use hardwood chunks), and the interior gets to 325 degrees in 10-20 minutes, depending on outside temp (even at 20 degrees F it gets hot fairly quickly). Advantage is you get the hardwood flavor plus you can do true BBQ at low temps for many hours on one load of fuel.
If you use hardwood instead of briquettes, they stay pretty clean. I clear out the ash once every 20-30 uses (let's see, that's 10-15 weeks between cleanings).
