Probably says more about 9-5 sales Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 9 Mar 2005 06:28:39 In Reply to: Owners seem pretty pleased with it - outpacing the 9-5, Scott Paterson [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 8 Mar 2005 20:35:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I live in CT, a hotbed of Saabs. There are some towns around here where you can't throw a stick and not hit one. When the 9-2 came out last summer/fall, the rush of sales was imperceptible. I was spending a lot of time in Saab stores, looking at 9-5 wagons. Salesmen were talking the 9-2 up, but they didn't seem to have a lot of anything but hope.
I haven't been in a Saab store in a few months, so I don't know if things have changed. But if I go by my informal parking lot surveys (I'm always keeping an eye out for Saabs), I have seen a total of One (1) 9-2X in private hands (non-dealer plates). Yes, it has been out only for a few months, and there is a large stock of 9-3s and 9-5s out there to skew the numbers.
I would say that in Connecticut, based on non-scientific observation, the 9-2X isn't selling well. My guess is that the relatively affluent CT market isn't where the 9-2 will shine. I would guess that it may do better in the Boston market area, but that's only a guess.
My wife and I peeked at the 9-2 in various showrooms this summer/fall. The fact that my brother owns a Subaru Impreza wagon doesn't help - it just looks like my brother's Subaru (or U-R-A-Bus backwards). An entirely nice car for what it is. But we have been spoiled on the room and comfort of the 9000, and the 900 before it.
As you may have noticed from my earlier rants, I'm not a believer that Saab (or any other manufacturer) needs to have a car in every market niche. If I want a small (emphasis on SMALL) 4WD wagon-thingy, I'll buy one with a Subaru label. I'm not enough of a Saab snob to need the label on any car I drive.
