For the info AVSForum.com is like Saabnet for home theater geeks. Great information about all the technologies and sets you might be interested in. Some chest beating over the different technologies, but overall very informative.
I bought a CRT projection set (Sony 46WT510) primarily out of budgetary constraints. On the floor DLP looks AWESOME though, if we'd had more than $1.5k that's probably what we would have gotten. However, there are some issues with the bulb life and noise from the "color wheel". Be VERY careful about it and do the research on the specific model you'll be buying. Haven't seen LCoS in real life, and LCD doesn't have anywhere close to the viewing angle and dynamic range of DLP. I'd probably get a CRT set over LCD projection.
Regular broadcast TV looks normal on a HDTV set, you'll notice more flaws and lines in the picture because it's (probably) a larger screen. HD broadcasts on the other hand are simply spectacular. We're talking individual blades of grass on the football field good. HD movies also ROCK, so if your cable/money allow HD-HBO and Starz are wonderful things (been watching Kill Bill and Return of the King in high def). Progressive scan DVDs fall somewhere in the middle, but there is a marked improvement between 480i and 480p with the reduction in motion artifacts.
Don't know if 1080p will be worth waiting for because 1080i and 720p are set as the broadcast standards and any good HD set will support both already. It might be good for HD-DVDs but that's still 2 years off in a practical sense. Waiting for the coming Blu-Ray/HD-DVD format war to settle out isn't worth delaying the TV purchase.
Good luck with your purchase, it can be a lot of fun. FWIW I had a VERY positive experience dealing with Circuit City over Best Buy. It's a long story but CC did a lot to earn some customer loyalty.
