Oops, I forgot to answer your orginal questions.
- What technology to go with: LCD, DLP, LCoS
Plasma. LCD was too gray (bad blacks and whites), DLP was too big (it's now possible to get DLP in about/under 8"), LCoS keeps looking like it's ready to get popular then falling back; Intel made a big announcement about LCoS at CES 2004 and then killed the project later in the year)
- How does an HDTV picture look with regular 4:3 broadcast vs. HD broadcasts vs. DVD's?
That depends. You can display 4:3 shows with black bars on the sides or use one of the display's stretching modes. Although I hated it at first because of the edge distortion, I use the "Just" mode on my Panasonics now. I know that it sounds weird to pay extra to get distorted pictures, but it works for me. I use the "Zoom" mode for "Widescreen" shows that normally display with black bars on the top and bottom. DVDs look great in ED or HD.
- Is it worth waiting for native 1080p resolution HDTV's to hit the market?
It wasn't for me. No broadcaster is sending out anything like 1920x1080 now and you'll be sitting far enough away from the set that you probably won't notice the difference anyway. But, everyone is motivated by their own issues.
- What’s the best place to find unbiased HDTV information?
There's no such thing as unbiased information when everyone giving the information has a big stake in it. (Am I really going to say that plasma sucks after spending over $10K on TVs???) That said, the AVS Forum has enough bright and honest people posting there that, given several weeks of reading you'll be able to pick apart the good info from the bad.
