You did not mention Plasma. I've had a 42" Panasonic for about two years now- it's a "pleasing purchase" one never regreted. Our cable company originally had 3 HiDef channels & now has 7. They look great and with some channels putting ut 5.1 channel sound, concerts are a real treat.
DVDs even with progressive scan players just are not that much better- although the size is nice.
Consider this - before the purchase and many times since I carefully compared the same program signal on side-by-side HiDef and ED (enhanced) monitors. I can not tell the difference. With careful questioning of the sales folks they will 'fess-up that only when using the screen as a computer monitor do they see a difference. The on-line reviewers say there is about a 10-15% benefit to HD over ED.
Get only the panel itself if you use cable. The cable people have a tuner as part of their system, and you probably already have a sound system including a receiver.
Nice 42" plasmas ED, no tuner, no speaker no amp can be had at $1500- 2000.
