Viewing distance, contrast ratios, and warranties

I bought a Panasonic 42" ED and a 50" HD plasma dispays last year. Here are some things to keep in mind as you shop.
1. Viewing distance matters. Check out the AVS Forums for info on it. Depending on the sze of the place where you'll view it, going for HD over ED will yield you nothing (unless you have very special eyes).
2. If you watch a lot of dark shows (sci-fi, 24, etc), make sure that you pay a lot of attention to contrast ratios (and know that all of the manufacturers lie about this) because you'll want a display that can show the difference between black and the many shades of dark gray. Higher ratios are better. LCDs, although getting better every year, still lag plasma sets. Panasonic plasmas have amazing contrast ratios.
3. A number of manufacturers will void the warranty if you buy online or from a gray market dealer. Also, some displays are made for the commercial world (generally those without tuners) and they usually don't have the same in-home repair coverage in their warranty; the consumer models (which do have tuners) generally include in-home repair. Related to this, if you use close captioning, know that the decoders are built in to the tuners. As a result, the commercial displays often can't display cc info.
4. DLP is a goo technology, but a small number of people have problems with and bright white areas. If these people move their heads quickly, the red, green, and blue used to dsplay white becomes apparent. Some of these folks report headaches from DLP. If you're going to buy DLP, go see one in a store first. If you're OK, feel free to buy.
Finally, pretty much every set you'll see in a store is misconfigured so that it looks OK under bright store lights. You will need to reconfigure it when you get it home. Take a look at the Avia DVD for seting up your display and audio components.
Good luck, Ken
