Way back when (in HS) I bought a used modified '56 Telecaster. However, I always wanted a red Gibson Melody Maker or red SG Junior. Richer tone and sustain, especially if overdriven with a pre-amp. At that time demand and popularity depended on who was playing what.
I would recommend used for sure. Used classics can be very expensive, but used current models are not bad. Also, I have seen some authorized foreign copies of the small Gibsons which have great sound and feel at a nice price.
