I play guitar and bass and have vastly different opinions.
1. A cheaper guitar (in good condition) and more expensive amp beat the pants off an expensive guitar and cheap amp every single time.
Withe a Squier or Mexican Fender and a nice tube amp (you choose: Matchless, Dr. Z, Vox, Super Reverb, whatever), you will have way better tone and more capability than a Fender Custom Shop model and a Crate practice amp. With the first setup you could jam with your buddies in a garage or tour the world and be fine. With the second setup you could sit in your bedroom and enjoy your nice guitar or get drowned out by your church's drummer.
2. Have you ever played a Les Paul? I love them and they are great guitars, but would be the completely wrong guitar for a young girl. They are really heavy and don't balance well on your lap. Unless she has a very stout shoulder and likes to jam standing up, a Les Paul is the wrong guitar for her.
