My doctor said that lack of sleep can contribute to heart disease. Make sure you get some cardio excersize, walking 30 minutes every other day at least. Take the stairs. Exercize encourages sound sleep. He felt that the average 35 -50 year old male needed 7.5 hours of quality sleep, no waking up in the middle of the night, and regular start/wake times. If you wake up just before the alarm, you are probably doing ok.
Diet and when you eat matters also. Avoid late meals, especially if you get home from work late. Avoid starchy, fatty foods and alcohol. In the last few years I've given up pizza, cheese, ice cream, fried foods and limit red meat to once a week at most. Granola, oatmeal, fruit, water, chicken, salmon and vegetables are now the routine. Gave up my beloved coffee for New Years and I went from an average four hours to seven hours a night in three months. High quality sleep makes a difference in high stress, need to think environments.
The doctor also said that if you realize you are/were dreaming, you are probably getting high quality sleep.
