Cell phones weren't the rage when my kids started driving, so that wasn't an issue. However, I pulled the radio fuse for about the first three months of their solo driving careers. The most frequent accidents invoving young drivers, not new drivers who are older, but young new drivers is following too closely. The other one is failing to yield the right-of-way while negotiating a left-hand turn. And of course, any booze or drugs, even if it involved a passenger, meant that their license went into my pocket. They're all adults now, but they took their driving seriously and have never dissapointed me. Once they were experienced, I made sure that they were furnished with some performance driving instruction.
My sister has three kids, all of them brats who do what they want because of submissive, idiotic parenting. A couple of years ago, on a Friday, her oldest son passed his driving test and was given the family Saab to cruise around with. He left at 3pm and returned at 7pm, smelling like cheap wine. My sister asked him if he was drinking and he told her "You're always on my case. Stop beatin' on my head." His punishment was that he wasn't allowed to use the car the next day. My sister saw that I took issue with such meaningless punishment and asked me in a confrontational manner what I would do. I told her that I would posess that driver's license for at least six months for such an act of indiscretion, let alone the lack of respect for me as a parent. I told her, "That's YOUR car, not his." Since then, the overindulged little dickhead has been involved in three accidents, none involving drinking, but all careless and unnecessary ones because neither he or his parents took this rite-of-passage seriously.
