My brother-in-law's son (17 or 18) recently totaled a 95 Dodge Intrepid while groping around for a CD he dropped while driving on a windy, hilly road. Left the road hit a tree, bounced off, rolled and landed up right. He's only alive because he was leaned over trying to find the CD. The airbag did not go off and the roof collapsed. The cops in the town (some tiny place in central MA) said the car was the worst wreck they had seen in years. Couldn't believe the kid got out.
Anyway, my daughter is about to get her license and will be driving a '95 9000 CS. She is paying for part of the insurance and we are actually creating a "contract" she will sign about driving behavior and car usage--and what happens when she screws up. It includes curfews, no passengers for three months, and not more than one for 3 months after that (some of which is a NH law anyway). No cell phone use while driving. And since the radio antenna doesn't work at the moment, I'm not in a hurry to fix it. She can live without it (I can't get the parts, is my excuse.)
I'm also planning to get her to a performance driving school after she has a few months on her own.
And Elron, just say NO to the radar detector. If not having it just makes him a little less likely to speed, it is a good thing.
