Lots of great suggestions here! We've already told him calling & driving is out, as well as allowing only a single friend at a time along with him (& we pre-approve the friend list). I forgot about driving drowsy! That's a definite topic of conversation! Yes, as far as changing CDs goes, I am concerned about that. I like the "only one" CD idea, but I might just go ahead & veto all CD use for now. I'll also explain how these rules will help him learn to anticipate others & protect himself & his passengers.
I also didn't think how it might look to an officer if he DID get stopped for speeding & has a detector! And that's a good topic to lead into HOW to react when (not "if") he's pulled over. No, I really don't expect him to use the radar detector as a way to speed. My feeling is: if he wants to speed, he's going to speed, detector or not. Since it's so old (Uniden RD 3XL), it's really just a curiosity. But it clicks & squeals & flashes, & the switches are tiny. All of your input has verified my gut feeling that it's not an appropriate "option" for his car to have.
Thanks again for all the great input!
