Kindergartener getting off schoolbus and crossing the road. Driver coming the opposite direction chatting on the cell phone ran him over. She did not see the schoolbus, or the stopsign sticking out the side, or the kid crossing the street, or the 25mph speed zone.
I've seen several studies on the increased attention required just for the conversation. It does not matter if you are hand held or not. The conversation alone changes you focus from 360degrees to about 10. In addition to the conversation you can handle 10degrees of visibility. That is assuming that you are not holding the phone, or dialing it, or looking for it, or having a stressful conversation, or having difficulty driving your car, or.... Drivers talking on the phone miss a lot of what is going on around them. Another study showed talking on a cell phone equivalent to a .1 blood alcohol- more than legally drunk in most states.
Empirically, I've seen two drivers look down to dial and drive off of an expressway. I've almost been hit several times by people taking a corner one handed. Can't count the number of times I've been passed at 80mph only to have the passer suddenly slow. As I blow by, they are dialing or just putting the phone to the ear. Makes my life trickier.
And it seems like every mom driving an Expedition, Navagator, Yukon, Hummer, or other overgrown SUV has a phone stuck in her ear.
I think Click and Clack may have it right even though they lost the battle. Their bumper sticker was "Drive Now, Talk Later".
