I have no problem with being on the phone if you're using a headset. Yes, talking on the phone does take some of my attention away from the road, even on a headset, but it's not any different from talking to a passenger in my car. I don't expect any of you to insist on silence in your car when you have passengers, so I don't see why you should stop people from talking on a phone, as long as it doesn't involve taking your eyes off the road (for example, to dial).
Dialing and receiving calls, as well as setting up your headset, is the difficult time. I don't dial or set up the headset unless I'm stopped at a light or cruising on the highway with very light traffic. If everything is set up, receiving a call isn't a problem. Otherwise, I'll only take a call if it has the potential to be important (boss calling 5 minutes after I left work because there's some emergency I have to come back and deal with, etc). I have distinct ringers for people I know, so I know who's calling and whether I want to answer it. If it turns out not to be important, I'll tell the person that I'm driving in traffic and that I'll call back later.
What bothers me in this thread are all the responses that say "I know I can do it, but lots of other people on the road shouldn't be allowed to." There's a saying I've heard: "95% of drivers think they are above average." These seem to be the same statements to me.
Aside from the issue of enforcing selective licensing for talking on a phone while driving (do you pull over every driver on a phone to check the endorsements on his license?), if you think you're that much better than everyone else, you're a delusional egotist.
