I think initial quality is up. Things are designed so that can't be assembled wrong.
I think long term quality is down, though. My guess is that they design the part not for very long life, just average life. Another related example is that before, some SAAB parts were the same for the turbo and non-turbo. Now they bean count and put some cheaper stuff in the Linear. Honda is no better. Their base Accord still has drum brakes.
