Just the opposite.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Sat, 30 Apr 2005 16:59:00 In Reply to: The death of quality (long), Noel, Fri, 29 Apr 2005 06:06:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Quality in manufacturing automobiles has skyrocketed. Problems/defects per car has been in decline for years. Entire car companies have been established based on new and old quality systems for the manufacturing as well as the people handling.
To say that today's Saab aren't built as well as Saabs of 'yore is complete BS and false romanticism. A 9-5 is one of the most reliable cars from any brand built. That's because the parent company GM has spent zillions studying quality and millions, I heard 750ish million, remodeling the Trollhattan plan and upgrading the quality of the manufacturing process.
New paints are much tougher than old paints, Aisin Warner Saab gearboxes are bulletproof, mechanics are no longer mystified by terms like serial bus and software downloading and the overall reliability has increased several fold for all manufaturers. Show me a tech/mechanic who doesn't have online tech support next to his toolbox. It's been said that the worst Hyundai is on average better than the best Lexus was 15 years ago.
And no manufacturer has benefitted more than Saab. You might not like the way GM cars are built, but statistically GM is more than holding their own with the likes of anybody in quality measurements.
You used to buy a Saab (or other interesting car) despite the reliability, now you can buy a Saab specifically for it's overall reliability and outstanding reliability vs the competition.
They don't build 'em like they used to is a sweet nostalgic thought, but just not true.
