Guess the box is a necessary evil then. Even with the wife and daughter from WA to TX we were packed in the Odyssey pretty well, so guess I understand. :-)
Yup - the AlCan is pretty abusive to cars. It varies by year as to which parts are paved/gravel - really - there are lots of sections that in Montana we would have called "unimproved" - or gravel... so YMMV as to how bad it is. The road is maintained only in the summer, and construction does happen, though irregularly. A bra would have saved some nasty paint damage to my Impreza - though investing in headlight covers (adhesive polymer - not cheap plastic) surely saved my headlights.
Key thing to remember if you do go up to AK - once you get past Dawson Creek - stop for gas pretty much every chance you get. It will start to get expensive and infrequent... It's a gorgeous drive, and puts you into a gorgeous state with tons to see. If you do go up, I recommend going up through WA, and out through Montana - gives you some sites to see, and can save you a few hundred miles too. Puts you in near Glacier Nat'l Park in Montana (my absolute favorite place :-) ).
