The Alcan is good now, much better than even 10-15 y ago. There is no gravel, except where under construction (there ALWAYS is some construction, but I just take it easy). Some parts of the road are notorious for frost heaves, most notably around Beaver Creek and Alaska/Yukon border, but these are not damaging as long as speed is reasonable and ones' eyes are open.
Although the Alcan is tamed, there are terrific drives in AK and the Yukon which ARE still fairly hard on a car, but not ridiculous. The Dalton Highway (Fairbanks to Prudhoe) and Top-of-the-World (Tok, Alaska to Dawson City) are great drives. The latter in particular is smooth gravel. The Dalton has truck traffic which throw up rocks, which is hard on windshields. It may be worth it though, as the views through the Brooks Range are stupendous. Another cool drive is the highway from Dawson City to Inuvik: ~800 km of pretty good gravel (120km/h on gravel, whooo wee!) Last year I stopped to help folks in a Turbo Bentley change a tire on that highway!
