Touchy one here... I've been on both sides of the equation:
I once bought an old VW that I was assured had only a bad headgasket, as it turned out, it had a warped head, and was basically valueless. I squawked and moaned, and eventually ended up paying what I thought was fair, but after a bill of sale and money changed hands. I did indeed feel like a jerk trying to renegotiate after the fact though.
However, last month, I sold my father's '01 Tahoe; I was as honest as possible with regard to any known-to-me defects, and like you, I knocked off a few bucks because of a problem (a torn CV boot). Most importantly, the eventual buyer took it to his mechanic (for $75 or so) and had him check it out. Because of these facts, that deal is closed, there is not a problem that could befall the car or statement the new owner could make to me to get me to renegotiate, or change the deal. I would politely but firmly explain to this person that you didnt misrepresent the condition of the car (assuming you didnt), and that the buyer should have had it inspected BEFORE making the decision to part with $3k. The prior owner's opinion (not statement of fact) that it would pass inspection is not something that a prudent buyer relies on by itself (you wouldnt buy a house, piece of art, collectible etc. without an independant appraisal, would you?). I would cease doing legwork for her and finding deals on the internet.
