For what it's worth, I am on the opposite side of this type of problem right now. Purchased a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE convertible with 119K miles through eBay for $10,600. I drove the car and opted not to have a pre-purchase inspection since I figured that even if I had to put $2000 into the car right away I would be ahead of the game. The car was in great condition, single owner with good service records including dealer maintenance every 30K miles up to 100K.
Well, after driving it home to DC from Syracuse I found that the A/C does not work due to a failed compressor and it needed rear brakes to pass inspection. After adding in the cost of the 120K service and a new set of tires I have spent about $3200 within a week. I view 50% of this as maintenace, but the compressor was an unwelcome and unexpected surprise. The seller, however, just shrugs his shoulders. For what it's worth, the Saab service department told me that the compressor could have gone from good to bad quickly and not been caught on an inspection.
