For the record, science is also my field - I'm a physicist working in atmospheric sciences, although I don't work on anything climate related.
Global cooling is a discredited theory. Research into the idea of it led to a wide range of discoveries regarding the behavior of atmospheric gases and global climate behavior.
Sure there is some debate on global warming, in particular the degree of human influence vs. natural cycles as well.
The facts of global warming remain however: glaciers are melting, permafrost is melting, droughts are increasing, hurricanes are getting more powerful, the oceans are acidifying and warming, and sea levels are rising. This is supported by the conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the national science academies of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, Russia, Brazil, India, and China, the US NRC, and the AMerican Meteorological Society.
As for Kyoto, complying with it would hardly wreck the US economy although it would certainly cause pain in many sectors. It would force the US economy to produce and use much more efficient technology - in the long term, this would be of great benefit. Staying out will cause long-term problems as what few products we still manufacture will not be acceptable in countries committed to lower greenhouse gas production.
