That's a common assumption, that's not really true, that Sporty's are better for beginners. The big hogs are actually more user friendly, lower CG, more relaxed. A sporty is a heavy bike too, not as well balanced as a hog.
But listen to that other voice, BMW, European style and sophistication instead of American iron That's gotta' appeal to a Saab guy, geez. The boxers have just been redone, RT, ST or GS. I just demo'd an '05 R1200RT with the electric suspension adjustments on the dash and it's quite an improvement over my '99 R1100RT (58k miles, most with my wife on the back). It's an incomparable motorcycle chassis, shaft drive, para-lever, telelever and light weight, but still a big twin. The electronic cruise is much nicer than any throttle lock, heated grips and heated seat are nice luxury touches. Cheaper than a Harley too and no need for tatoos or piercings...
