I really don't recommend Harleys, or any of the bigger BMWs as a first bike. Same goes for the big Japanese bikes. You crashed the little 250 while zooming around the MSF parking lot, now's not the time to think about getting a bike 3x the size! Not to mention the dismay of messing up the looks of a nice bike like a Harley.
If you're interested in cruisers, the 500-800cc Japanese bikes are pretty good for beginners. Even better IMHO are the medium sized "standard" bikes like the Suzuki GS500, Ninja 500, Buell Blast, or even the BMW 650. Great ergos, good handling, plenty of power.
In summary, for your first bike buy used, buy small-ish, buy cheap. Spend money on some decent riding gear. Spend a year or two or three learning to ride, then move up to your "dream" bike.
And FWIW, you don't need to lock up a wheel for braking in a turn to send you down. ABS won't necessarily help you out there.
