For $4k there's a good selection of older BMW's too. If you want something in a real light weight on old 650 airhead comes to mind. Older oilheads like R1100 GS's and RT's can get down to that price range, especially for all the guys trading for the new R1200's

I'm not sold on the smaller is better for newbie *street* motorcyclists. Once you master the balance and operation of a motorcycle, a bigger motorcycle is easier to ride, on the street. Big hogs are easy to ride, why do you think rednecks can do it.... Having said that the best motorcycle education comes from a dirt bike. A training bike should best be a dual sport. Practice powerslides and falling off in the dirt. For the street find a group to ride with so the guy in front is controlling the corner speeds and route and you can follow along.
