I've only been riding for two years, but from my experience, and from what you said about falling, don't buy an expensive bike.... yet!
I started off with a little Suzuki 650 that I got for $600. It wasn't a beautiful bike, but it was great for that first year of riding. Its important to learn how the bikes move at different speeds, and while some bikes will ride differently, you want that basic knowledge.
Don't waste $4k on a bike to learn on. Instead, get a little beater. $1000 will get you a nice old bike thats in good shape. Then, after a season, if you are tired of it, then move on to something bigger.
Someone else mentioned that bigger bikes ride better, and are often easier to ride. I agree, but its still more dangerous, as they are easier to drop, and can go a lot faster.
Good luck, and be careful. Thats the end of my rant.
Oh, and don't rule out Triumph. Its euro, but still with that classic cruiser edge!
