Wrong Plates - Advice?

So today, I went to Boston to swap in a new turn signal lever and fix some other minor business on my friend's just purchased 88 900T, and went for a spin to make sure all was well. Within a mile or 2, I was pulled over, the car was impounded, and I was left to walk home. My friend has VT plates, having just sold his pickup truck, and was told by the Vermont DMV that he could just swap the plates, carry his old registration, and had a couple weeks to come in and get new paperwork. Though this would be fine in VT, as it turns out, this is irrelevant in MA, so I have a summons for driving an unreg, uninsured vehicle + a charge for attaching improper plates... The car is insured, but he didn't have a new ins card in there to prove it at the time.
So. Where does this go? Apparently, I can request a hearing to determine whether or not charges should be filed. Do I want to do this? Anyone ever been there and have advice on how to proceed? I cannot really afford to lose my license and not be able to get to work... Thanks for any help, all.
