American Driver's Ed?

I read Egan's article and recall a reference to driver's education in the US and how it's evolved since I was in high school. Now it's outsourced, like so many other things, to private contractors rather than teachers in the school who would (presumably) know students on a more day-to-day basis. Neither system is a guarantee of excellence or mediocrity, but the latter has some chance for consistency perhaps.
But driver ed is also indicative of how education in the US is faring in general, not just in driving.
In the meantime, I try to tell my 15 year old who's waiting for his time to come that a good driver MUST be something like an ace fighter pilot--constant situational awareness and energy management are keys to being smooth, economical, safe--and fast, too.
