Once again, it was amazing. I had a crappy little Nissan Micra with a 1.0L engine and NO passing power. I got it up to 160km/hr with a tail wind on a downhill stretch. The left lane practices in the Czech Repubic were on par with what I've experienced in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. It was simply wonderful. People there know how to drive. If only the bus and service vehicle traffic at Paris CDG airport could get it together... Yowza.
In California I tend to use what I call "The California Fast Lane", a.k.a. the right-hand lane. So many morons just won't move over, so I slip by in the right lane.
I have to say that in the year I've spent in Canada (mostly Ontario), they're only slightly better than the US. The left lane stuff seems very similar, but they do tend to drive a good clip faster.
As for cops with speed traps, I'll never understand. I don't know why they crack down so hard and tell us it's for safety. It's revenue generation, pure and simple. Thankfully the state budget in CA is low, and the state is huge. We don't have the same problems as those in OH, PA, IN, and NY (notorious speed trap states from my experience).
Having returned from eastern europe, I see more than ever how the cops and government like to limit us here in the USA. Over there they take a much stronger stance on important issues (drunk driving) and let the day to day stuff be a little more reliant on common sense and training. Perhaps it's culture. Hell, they have porn in daily news papers and young drinking ages. But that doesn't mean the country is going to hell in a handbasket. Try that here and see what people have to say about it.
