I think you're going in the right direction. You've heard scary stories about burn-in and short panel life. It just is not a problem of significance anymore. About two years ago I popped for a Panasonic 42" plasma- it's been perfect. Great picture, motion, color saturation, and off-angle viewing.
After reading some posts (below) about the new DLPs, I went to the local Fry's (monster store) today to see them side-by-side, including the 1080p models. They all used the same HD input (a local Public Broadcasting station), usually a great signal. The large DLPs were $4-5k, looked OK within ~90 deg arc in the middle, but not as good as the Plasmas. It wasn't close. And the plasmas were cheaper. The real question is if you can tell the difference between the HD and ED plasmas. The reviewers say there is about a 10% improvement in the picture with the HD set. I struggle to see the difference. I suggest you see a bunch in the same place with the same high quality signal and then trust your eyes.
Panasonic sells more plasmas than anyone in the US and there is a reason- nobody is better. Some are as good, but not better. As someone else suggested, cruise a bit at AV Forum (see link). The 42" ED can be found for ~$1500, the HD for $2300, and a 50' HD for$3500. Merry Christmas
