Mine is now 3 or 3.5 years old. I was an early adopter. Plasmas will get dimmer as time goes on. I think it might be happening to mine but I can still use the "low" light setting.
When I bought it, I had actually picked the Panasonic over the Samsung but got the Samsung because they had no more Panasonics left and gave me a deal on the Samsung. I am pretty happy with it. They have fixed the things that annoy with me with the Samsung with the next model so I have no complaints.
I like the Panasonic a little better; even today but they are both good.
If I were to do it again and needed a flat screen, I would consider the LCD flat screens. They cost more though. The Plasmas are heavy. Mine is about 85 lbs.
I need a flat screen because I love having the fireplace and TV share the focus in the family room. Also, when the TV sticks out into the room less, the stereo sounds better. :)
HD vs ED? This seems religeous to some folks. If you watch a lot of DVDs, ED is fine but if you have a high def signal and watch a lot of sports, then the HD will be a little better. In either case, I found that those two plasmas look better with a high definition signal when you feed a 720P signal to them. Also, for DVD players that have an optional 720P output it is the same. The only thing about feeding a 720P signal to them is when you have a standard definition signal it has to upconvert the signal to 720P and it looks worse than if you just sent it 480P or 480i. This seems to only be the case with the DVI cable however. Not sure why. All I know is that a high def signal looks weird if sent from my high def tuner to the TV in 1080i or 480x.
I think the BEST VALUE for picture is the Samsung DLP style. They are not flat screens and will still take up lots of room. I have a couple of friends who have bought them and are very happy. One friend was an early adopter and has had no problems.
Hope this helps somehow. Send me an email if you have specific questions.
Bill
