Have you talked to a pool contractor yet? In some areas, you can only get party pools due to zoning laws. These are usually 3.5 feet deep at each end and about 5.5 feet in the middle. I had one when I lived in El Paso. OK, but not worth the money, IMHO. I now live with a huge pool that's 10ft deep at one end with a diving board. I don't even know if you can get boards in some areas anymore, but this pool is great fun for everyone.
I was lucky when I moved in that it had all new pool equipment, but I've since had to re-wire it all (inadequate ground) and have it re-plastered. Other than that, they're cheap to maintain.
A fence to keep small children away is a must, btw. Plan on it.
